2020 AGM Recap and Winter Maintenance Teaser!

Hey VIKs,

Today’s update includes a recap of last night’s AGM and a WM teaser:

  1. AGM Recap

Our 2020 – 2021 season has officially begun!

The Vikings’ Annual General Meeting on November 17 marked the end of a swim season like no other. To say 2020 has been unusual and uniquely challenging is a massive understatement – as such, the AGM was a welcome opportunity to reconnect virtually with some of our members.

For those of you who weren’t able to make the meeting, here are some highlights:

We heard from each of President Simon Kent, VP Wendy Woloshyn, Treasurer Rebecca Chan, Registrar Ee Laine Tiah, and head of our Return to Sport subcommittee Lauren Ilich. If you wish to obtain copies of any of their reports, please email communications@vancouvervikings.com.

Key topics of discussion were the Vikings’ strong financial position and the ongoing efforts involved in keeping our swimmers in the water during a pandemic.

Our other order of business at the meeting was to elect / appoint the 2020 – 2021 Vikings Executive. We had 5 vacancies to fill and 5 nominees (3 parents who were on the Board last year and 2 who are new to the Board). All nominees were acclaimed / appointed unanimously by the members present.

We are delighted to introduce your Board members for the coming season – a group of truly engaged and dedicated parents who look forward to working with our incredible community of Vikings swimmers, coaches and parents:

  • President: Lauren Ilich (term ends 2021).
  • Vice President (also Registrar): Ee Laine Tiah (term ends 2022).
  • Secretary: Aly Karsan (term ends 2022).
  • Treasurer: Rebecca Chan (term ends 2022).
  • Director at Large (also Volunteer Coordinator): Courtney Tang (terms ends 2021).
  • Director at Large: Fiona Beveridge (term ends 2022).
  • Director at Large: Lori-Ann Wilchek (term ends 2022).

Congratulations and thank you to all of these VIK parents for stepping up to help lead this wonderful Club. And thank you to departing board members Simon Kent and Wendy Woloshyn for their many years of passionate and engaged leadership!

Here are all the details.

1. Group Lists

We have organized our swimmers into 6 groups, based on the swimmers who registered for Summer 2020. Registration will occur by group. Existing VIKs should check their email for details on which group their swimmers are in. Only swimmers who registered for our 2020 summer season may register for our fall session.

2. Registration

Some important reminders re registration:

  • Registration for Groups 1 to 4 opens on Saturday Sept 12 at 9 am. Registration for Groups 5 and 6 will happen once we can confirm their practice times.
  • You must complete the online waiver found here on our website BEFORE you register.
  • Registration will occur using Active.com, through our website here.
  • Registration will be done based on which training group your child is in. If your child is in Group 1, there will be only two practice options. If that time works for your family, you can try to register through Active. If you are in Groups 1 – 4, you must register and pay for the 2 practices per week; there will not be an option to just register for 1 weekly practice.
  • You must sign the Parent Participation Agreement which includes a commitment to fulfill mandatory volunteering assignments at practices. This agreement will be part of the Active.com registration process.
  • Registration will be first come, first served, with each group limited to 18 swimmers for Groups 1 to 4 and 12 swimmers for Groups 5 and 6. We will create a waitlist for those not able to register their child.
  • You will need to familiarize yourself with our Return to Sport Plan for each pool facility that your child is swimming at.
